Both open and women&#8217;s competitions were knockout tournaments (2-game matches with a tiebreaker if needed) with classical time control. The total prize fund was 60,000 AZN (~$35,000 USD) for the open section and 30,000 AZN (~$17,500 USD) for the women\u2019s section, with the champions receiving 20,000 AZN and 10,000 AZN, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/chessbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-20.png 1000w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-20-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-20-768x502.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike in previous editions, the 2025 Open Championship boasted the strongest possible lineup, with all of Azerbaijan\u2019s top players\u2014including national team members\u2014participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top three seeds lived up to expectations, advancing to the semifinals, while Misratdin Iskandarov, ranked #12 at the start, caused an upset by eliminating Nijat Abasov and Aydin Suleymanli to reach the final four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first semifinal, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, the tournament&#8217;s rating favorite, dominated Iskandarov to secure his spot in the final. The second semifinal was a much tighter contest, with Rauf Mamedov narrowly defeating Teimour Radjabov in an Armageddon game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"679\" src=\"https:\/\/chessbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-21.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-21.png 1000w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-21-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-21-768x521.png 768w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-21-305x207.png 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The final was a match of two worthy opponents that saw a real drama at the finish. &nbsp;After two classical and the first tiebreaker games were drawn, Mamedyarov blundered a rook in an equal endgame, handing the title to Mamedov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the bronze medal match, Iskandarov defeated Radjabov to complete the podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/chessbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-22.png 1000w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-22-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-22-768x458.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rating favorites dominated the women\u2019s event with the top, second, third and fifth seed advancing to the semifinals. Both matches were very close and came down to tiebreaks where Govhar Beydullayeva edged out Ulviyya Fataliyeva, while Gunay Mammadzada overcame Gulnar Mammadova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women\u2019s final was equally tense\u2013after the opponents traded blows in classical games, a tiebreaker was needed to determine the champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"670\" src=\"https:\/\/chessbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-23.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-23.png 1000w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-23-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-23-768x515.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gunay Mammadzada drew the first game with black and then instructively converted her advantage in the second-game ending to clinch the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the match for third place, Gulnar Mammadova outplayed Ulviyya Fataliyeva to claim bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"606\" src=\"https:\/\/chessbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-24.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-24.png 1000w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-24-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/chessbangladesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-24-768x465.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the closing ceremony, held shortly afterward, Chief Arbiter Lutfiyar Rustamov announced the final results.
